Summary

In 1999， after publishing three cult novels， celebrated author Nathan Fawles announces the end of his writing career and withdraws to Beaumont， a wild and beautiful island off the Mediterranean coast。

Autumn 2018。 As Fawles’ novels continue to captivate readers， Mathilde Monney， a young Swiss journalist， arrives on the island， determined to unlock the writer’s secrets and secure his first interview in twenty years。

That same day， a woman’s body is discovered on the beach and the island is cordoned off by the authorities。

Een dun verhaal dat in flarden aan elkaar hangt。 De personages zijn erg vlak en blijven dat ook， waardoor je als lezer totaal niet wordt meegenomen in het verhaal。 Bovendien is het plot verre van origineel。

Mystery set on the fictional island of Beaumont （Var Mediterranean France）You Tube Review: https://youtu。be/U2qWMTffGYoI do like a good map at the start of the novel。 I was looking at a map of the Var coastline in Southern France and was struck how one of the Îles d’Hyères， just off Toulon， has exactly the same shape as the fictional Island of Beaumont in the novel。 Being an experienced literary sleuth I put two and two together。 The island has been given its very own unique， fictional and charm Mystery set on the fictional island of Beaumont （Var Mediterranean France）You Tube Review: https://youtu。be/U2qWMTffGYoI do like a good map at the start of the novel。 I was looking at a map of the Var coastline in Southern France and was struck how one of the Îles d’Hyères， just off Toulon， has exactly the same shape as the fictional Island of Beaumont in the novel。 Being an experienced literary sleuth I put two and two together。 The island has been given its very own unique， fictional and charming， sometimes quirky identity – the two restaurants on the island are called Wuthering Bites and Taming of the Stew。 This is after all the story of an author and there will be plenty of literary references along the way。On a trip to Cannes we took a boat out to the Île Sainte-Marguerite， just off the coast， and given the wonderful descriptions in the novel， I could easily transport myself back to that Mediterranean island as a point of reference， not that far East。 The colours and sun would， I imagine， be just the same， with a convent and crenelated buildings and lush vegetation that is so prolific in that part of the world。It is 2018 and Nathan Fawles is living as a recluse on the island。 In the late 1990s he wrote his last novel to much acclaim and then simply stopped writing。 Such a mystery to all his readers。 Raphaël Bataille has taken a job as the local island book shop winds down， moving towards eventual closure; he too is an early days author and he has his eye firmly set on Fawles， who， he hopes， would surely critique his first novel。 He does indeed attempt a meeting but Fawles is not having any of it and sees him off with a shotgun！ He clearly does not want his privacy invaded。Swiss journalist Mathilde Monney is also on the island， determined to discover why Fawles stopped writing and secure an interview。 Then， the body of a young woman， pegged out on an ancient eucalyptus tree， is discovered and the island is cut off by the police， the whole land mass treated as a crime scene。Links are just asking to be made and the characters soon get on with unravelling secrets。 This is a very readable novel， with quirky and dark moments interspersed with humour。 。。。more

قُدِّمَ لي هذا الكتاب كهدية من صديقتي يوم حلقة بحث تخرُّجي السبت 12 يونيو 2021。 ما كنت أعرفه عن الكاتب حينها هو القليل: "حياة الكاتب السرية" كان حينها أحدث كتاب لغيوم ميسو، وكان مختلفاً عن أعماله الماضية。 هذا كل شيء。 هو أول كتاب أقرأله لهذا الكاتب。 وفعلياً لم تكن الـplot twist هي في الرواية。。 إنما عند اكتشافي أنَّ الـgenre التي ينتمي إليها الكتاب هي drama وcrime وthriller بعد قراءة حوالي نصف الرواية。。 كما لو أنني وقعت في فخ نصبه لي جهلي عن الكاتب。 هذه الـgenres هي الأقل جاذبيةً بالنسبة لي。 مع ذل قُدِّمَ لي هذا الكتاب كهدية من صديقتي يوم حلقة بحث تخرُّجي السبت 12 يونيو 2021。 ما كنت أعرفه عن الكاتب حينها هو القليل: "حياة الكاتب السرية" كان حينها أحدث كتاب لغيوم ميسو، وكان مختلفاً عن أعماله الماضية。 هذا كل شيء。 هو أول كتاب أقرأله لهذا الكاتب。 وفعلياً لم تكن الـplot twist هي في الرواية。。 إنما عند اكتشافي أنَّ الـgenre التي ينتمي إليها الكتاب هي drama وcrime وthriller بعد قراءة حوالي نصف الرواية。。 كما لو أنني وقعت في فخ نصبه لي جهلي عن الكاتب。 هذه الـgenres هي الأقل جاذبيةً بالنسبة لي。 مع ذلك أسرني غيوم ميسو بسحر وصفه لأجواء القصة وشخصياتها。 وأعجبت كثيراً في النهاية ببراعته في ربط الأمور。 توجد بعض النقاط الضعيفة التي نقدتها شخصياً في النهاية ولكن مازالت رائعة وأنصح بها أي شخص يحب أفلام التشويق والإجرام أو محبي آجاثا كريستي。 شخصياً الرواية أعجبتني （مجرد إعجاب لا أكثر） لأنني لست من هواة الكتابات البوليسية。 وتعلمت أن معظم كتابات غيوم ميسو هي رومنسية بوليسية。 ولكن - لحسن حظي - لم يكن هناك طابع رومنسي يلف رواية "حياة الكاتب السرية"。 وأعتقد أن هذا عامل أساسي ساهم باستمتاعي بالرواية。 （أعتقد أن هذا هو السبب الذي جعل من حولي يقترحونها علي ويقولون أنها مختلفة عن أعماله السابقة。。 أكره بشدة الرومنسيات التافهة في الروايات 3: ）إذاً لماذا 3 نجوم عوضاً عن 4؟لأن الكاتب - للأسف الشديد - جبرني على تكرير سؤالي كما يحصل معي في أي رواية جيدة - بل ممتازة - أصل في صفحاتها إلى سطر يجعلني أصرخ: "لماذا بحق الجحيم لم يعتزل الأدب cliché فقدان الشخصيات للذاكرة؟！" لمذا لم تنقرض هذه الطريقة الضعيفة التي تفسر العجز الإبداعي على تبرير تصرفات الشخصيات من الأعمال الأدبية؟！ لولا هذا ربما لقيّمتها بـ4، لكنها مازالت جيدة。。 جيدة جداً، وسأنصح غيري بها حتماً، لكن ليس أمثالي بكل تأكيد。。 وليس أي شخص يرغب مضموناً فلسفياً عميقاً يسري في عروقه。 هي فقط قصة مشوّقة مرسومة بشكل دقيق وجميل للغاية。 لوحة تستمتع بألوانها بضعة دقائق وتغادر。 。。。more

opet， muso ima mnogo bolje knjige od ove， ali uopšte nije lošasmorila sam se negde na sredini i malo mi je falilo da prestanem da je čitam， ali je drugi deo knjige jako turbulentan i interesantan， uz to je radnja stvarno izokrenuta i kraj je， makar meni， neočekivandala bih joj 4，5 da mogu :/

Thank you to Alex Layt for my invitation to the tour and for my copy of the book in return for a fair and honest review。The book begins with the introduction to a cult writer Nathan Fawles。 He wrote three books then disappeared into obscurity on the Isle of Beaumont in the Mediterranean。 A young writer， Raphael， who is fascinated with the work of Nathan， arrives on the island as an assistant in the local bookshop and he thinks that it will enable him to meet his writing idol。 When he arrives he Thank you to Alex Layt for my invitation to the tour and for my copy of the book in return for a fair and honest review。The book begins with the introduction to a cult writer Nathan Fawles。 He wrote three books then disappeared into obscurity on the Isle of Beaumont in the Mediterranean。 A young writer， Raphael， who is fascinated with the work of Nathan， arrives on the island as an assistant in the local bookshop and he thinks that it will enable him to meet his writing idol。 When he arrives he meets Audibert the owner he tells him that it is a short term job because he will be closing the shop for good。 The Scarlet Rose the bookshop is old and tired but Audibert tells him it was not always been this way it had once thrived and was visited by famous authors。When the Raphael has his first meeting with Nathan Fawles at the end of a shotgun， his protests for him to help him write， fall upon deaf ears and Nathan tells him being a writer is a waste on time。 Unfortunately for Nathan the meeting also ends badly and then he loses his precious dog Bronco。 He is found but in order to retrieve him Nathan has to agree to another writer coming to the house。 This time its a Swiss journalist called Mathilde who found Bronco， he is very reluctant but knows that he has no choice to have Bronco returned。 Mathilde returns the dog to him and says that they have met previously， and Nathan is very taken with her， which surprises him。As the story progresses we slowly unravel the pasts of the characters and what has brought them to where they are and what is really clever is the smallest thing can be really important。 Raphael soon settles in and then he hears there has been a murder on the virtually crime less island and a particularly gruesome one too。There are several things that when I start reading a book make me smile as I know I am going to love it。 An eccentric author ， a bookshop and a small island are amongst them， as well a map at the beginning of the book。 I had not read anything by this author before but I can see why he is so popular， I was hooked ！Murder， intrigue， and suspense by the bucket load， all set on an island， and the writing is effortless and I was desperate to find out more about the mysterious Nathan Fawles。 Is there more than meets the eye to why he stopped writing ？ I loved the way the author in the fantastic novel that kept me guessing until the end。A stunning crime thriller I loved it ！5 Stars ***** 。。。more

le jour où je ne mets pas 5/5 à un livre de musso est arrivé。 l’histoire était vraiment je recommande mais le problème c’est la fin ？？？ je ne sais pas si c’est parce que c’est trop subtil pour moi ou si c’est juste difficile à comprendre。 l’épilogue est sous le point de vue d’un personnage du livre il me semble mais je n’en suis pas sûr et c’est ce qui me perturbe。 en vrai j’ai une théorie mais je ne suis pas sûr de moi。

Provavelmente o livro mais instigante que já li até hoje。 É sobre um escritor um tanto frustrado que vai a uma ilha em que supostamente mora seu ídolo escritor， mas coincidentemente alguns crimes acontecem na ilha， e assim todo um rolê muito foda acontece， leia pf， é incrível。 Além disso， tem comentários， recortes de entrevistas e etc sobre a literatura em si que te batem como tapa， é perfeito。
